Bottom-of-the-table Schalke named Gramozis new coach after Gross was sacked

Schalke, bottom club of the German Premier League, named Demetrius Gramozis as the new coach until 2022, two days after the sacking of Swiss Christian Gross.

The 42-year-old Gramozis is a former player in the German Bundesliga and the Greek youth team and has coached clubs in the lower divisions so far, including Darmstadt 98 in the second division, and he will be the fifth coach of Schalke in this season.

"The club is confident that Demetrius Gramozis is the right coach for the team in the final third of the season," said Schalke Club's current sporting director, Peter Canabel.

"We all know the sporting situation, but there are still 11 games in the league and we must try to get out of them with good results as possible. Demetrius is the right choice," he added.

On Sunday, Schalke split from his coach Gross, his assistant and several club officials, including sporting director Jochen Schneider, following his 5-1 defeat to Stuttgart in the league on Saturday.

Gramozis will succeed coach Gross, 66,. David Wagner, Manuel Baum and Hope Stevens Schalke also coached this season.

Schalke are bottom of the standings with nine points from 23 games.
