Kenya's president pledges to promote regional unity as chair of the East African Community

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta pledged to lead the regional unity and prosperity of the East African Community (EAC) during his tenure as the group chair.

In a speech delivered at the twenty-first regular summit of heads of state of the East African Community, Kenyatta said that he would focus on strengthening partnerships and strengthening ties within the EAC countries, as well as ensuring the sustainable implementation of projects and programs in the productive sectors.

The Kenyan leader, who took over the leadership of the group from his Rwandan counterpart Paul Kagame, said in a statement after the meeting that he would spare no effort to take the region to the highest levels.

Uhuru stressed the need for partner countries to coordinate with each other on their commitment to the free movement of people, workers and services in accordance with the protocol of the common market in the region.

It is noteworthy that the East African Community is an international organization that includes six countries from East Africa, namely Burundi, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania and South Sudan.
