Rouhani: We will not allow foreign companies to test Corona vaccines on Iranians

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said today, Saturday, that his country will not allow foreign companies to test vaccines against Covid-19 on the Iranian people, a day after Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei banned the import of vaccines from the United States and Britain.

"Foreign companies wanted to give us vaccines to be tried on the Iranian people, but the Ministry of Health prevented that," Rouhani said in televised statements. But he did not mention the names of the companies and did not give more details.

"Our people will not be a test tool for vaccine manufacturers ... We will buy safe foreign vaccines," Rouhani added.

On Friday, Khamenei said that the United States and Britain were "untrustworthy" and that they might have sought to spread the infection to other countries.

He added that vaccines can be obtained "from other reliable places," without giving details. China and Russia are allies of Iran, which is the country most affected by the Coronavirus epidemic in the Middle East.

Khamenei repeated the accusations in a tweet deleted by Twitter that said in a message that the post violated the company's rules against disinformation.

Iran began late last month to test its first domestic candidate vaccines to prevent Covid-19 in humans, and said that it may help it defeat the epidemic, despite US sanctions that curb its ability to import vaccines.
